Marks & Spencer, the famous upmarket UK store chain, aims to recycle as many clothes as it sells – 350 million items a year – with its Shwopping campaign launched recently.
“The retailer will give all “shwopped” clothes – those recycled by customers – to Oxfam, which will re-sell them through its website and stores, reuse them where there is demand or recycle them into new materials.
According to M&S, some 500,000 tonnes of clothes are landfilled each year, equivalent to the weight of the world’s tallest building, the Burj Kalifa.
