All going to plan, Wynyard Quarter is to be the site for a 1500-square-metre edible garden come springtime.
The Garden to Table Trust is working with Waterfront Auckland on the project, which will also include a kitchen classroom, where it is hoped that 500-600 children per week will come to learn about growing, harvesting, preparing and sharing the food grown in the garden.
Bordering Daldy and Madden Streets, the garden will be organic, benefitting from the organic waste and coffee grounds produced at its neighbouring restaurants.
Trust founder and chair Catherine Bell says the project provides new visibility for its work: “Simply by educating kids about where food comes from we have the potential to change attitudes and habits of whole future generations. Both children and adults learn experiences that will influence and inform them and it will be brilliant to have this new space in such a high traffic area as the Wynyard Quarter.”
