Early season apples may be ready to pick. If an apple comes off the branch easily, without being pulled, it is ripe. It is best to pick fruit before it falls and bruises. Pears are one fruit which will continue to ripen once picked.
This month is a good time to carry out any major pruning work. Any diseased, broken or crossed over wood should be removed. Pruning now helps stop the tree putting all its energy into growing new lush growth but rather helps to form fruiting spurs. Spurs are what will grow you more lovely fruit next summer.

Make seed pots out of egg cartons, toilet rolls or recycle yogurt pottles.
