Back in 1996 the Papakura Lions Club purchased a lens meter and other necessary equipment to process eyeglass recycling after a need was identified to supply spectacles to aid people in the Pacific Islands, where blindness is common as a side effect of Type 2 Diabetes.
Today unwanted glasses are received from all over the North Island. They are sorted, repaired, cleaned and packed for delivery.
Volunteer optometrists there test patients and fit them with the recycled glasses at no cost.
Sunglasses are also a useable item for the Islands particularly after cataract operations.
Transporting the glasses to the Islands can also be problematic so any help is also appreciated. Some firms have spare room in their containers, and travellers often take a few boxes up as personal luggage.
