Tonga will soon have a new solar farm that will generate 1880MWh of electricity per annum; that’s four per cent of the main island, Tongatapu’s energy demand.
The solar farm, which is expected to be generating by July 2012, is an important step towards supporting the Tongan Government’s Energy Road Map. It will reduce Tonga’s diesel consumption by about 470,000 litres and carbon dioxide emissions by over two thousand tonnes annually.
The build combines the expertise and efforts of a range of world-class developers and manufacturers, including New Zealand companies Meridian Energy, as the lead developer; Reid Technology, as the lead contractor and construction manager; and Kordia, as the civil design and electrical support contractor.
Construction began in November on undeveloped land adjacent to the Popua Power Station on the main island of Tongatapu. The site will cover a site of 2.5 hectares and comprise 5,760 Solarworld photovoltaic solar panels.
